Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology

As a fellow in gastrointestinal and hepatobillary pathology, you will be expected to spend approximately 70% of your time on clinical work and 30% in research. Clinical duties include participation in signing out surgical G.I. and liver specimens, other biopsies, and consult cases. Teaching will be primarily case-based, via one-on-one tutorials with the program director. This will be supplemented by readings, conferences and regular interactions with other faculty. You will rotate on the G.I. and liver pathology services at Memorial Hermann and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospitals to participate in clinical activities, conferences, rounds, etc.

You will be expected to take initiative for your continuous learning and to perform responsibly in clinical service and education and to conduct research resulting in a peer reviewed publication under the direction of a senior faculty. Adequate graduated responsibility is a major deficiency of many pathology fellowships. Fellows may complete 6 years of approved GME training without ever completing a case independently. This fellowship will address this problem by having you take primary responsibility for cases under the watchful eye of senior pathologists. You will be expected to identify and seek proper assistance on difficult cases. We expect you to gain confidence in your ability to work-up cases effectively. All faculty in the department currently receive $2000 for faculty development to be used for supplies, books, travel related to university projects, professional dues, etc. The department also pays fees for the Texas medical license renewals.
